Concentrates: shatter, badder, diamonds and what matters

Concentrates are what is left when the plant is stripped down to its oils and resins. They are the strongest thing on a Florida menu, the most expensive by weight, and the category with the most confusing names.

The names, decoded

Most of the words describe texture, not quality. Texture comes from how the extract was handled after it was made, and it tells you almost nothing about how good it is.

What the words mean

  • Shatter. Hard and glassy. Snaps. Mostly a handling choice.
  • Budder and badder. Whipped into something like cake frosting. Easier to scoop.
  • Sugar and sauce. Crystals in an aromatic liquid. Usually high in terpenes.
  • Diamonds. Crystallised THCA, often sold sitting in sauce. Very strong, often low in flavour on its own.

The distinction that does matter

Not texture. How the plant was treated before extraction, and whether solvents were involved.

Live

Made from plant frozen immediately after harvest. Keeps far more of the original aroma. Costs more.

Cured

Made from dried and cured plant, like flower. Cheaper, less aromatic, often just as potent.

And separately: rosin is pressed with nothing but heat and pressure, while most other concentrates use a solvent that is then purged. Solventless costs more and is what people mean when they talk about the premium shelf.

Strength, honestly

Flower commonly tests in the high teens to high twenties as a percentage. Concentrates run from roughly 60% to past 90%. That is not a small step up, and the main practical consequence is that the amount you use is tiny and hard to judge by eye.

If you are coming from flower, the quantity that looks like “barely anything” is usually still too much. Start with less than you think is a reasonable minimum.

Is it worth the money?

Per milligram of THC, concentrates are often cheaper than flower. Per experience, they are a different thing rather than a stronger version of the same thing, and plenty of long-term flower users do not prefer them.

If you want to try the category without committing, look for sauce or badder from a grower whose flower you already like, in the smallest size the shop sells. Concentrates are discounted regularly in Florida, and the premium shelf goes on promotion more often than you would expect.
